BOOM! CRASH! OPERAAAAAA!

I feel like each one of these is better than the one before it. I’m really pleased with this one.

Would totes attempt to sculpt this.

It’s aliiiiive… IT’S ALIIIIIIIVVVE!!!!

So after god knows how many weeks . I’ve finally got it constructed and working.

Excuse the poor video quality, was taken with my phone:

Had to file out some of the holes as they weren’t exactly centre so it could spin true.
Had to remake one of the pulleys as there was too much slack in the inner belt.
Getting the gears to mesh was pretty fiddly and due to the gears being threaded on the machine can only rotate in an anticlockwise direction otherwise (as there is no stop on the end of the smaller gear) it unwinds off the shaft.
Spinning it just mocked up looked like it would wobble, but once the frame was screwed in place there is no movement or resistance in the spin. I allowed an attachment point on the opposite corner of the frame to put a weight to counter the offset of the gear mechanism, but once it was all bolted together, there doesn’t seem a need for it.

SO. All I need to do now is give the frame a coat of paint to stop the steel from rusting and get a proper power plug connection set up, as at the moment I have to hold the terminals by hand.

Then it’s time to test it out. SO chuffed it actually works.

Frame cut, drilled and nailed in place like a splayed bug in a museum, ready to be welded.

Hopefully my measurements are accurate enough and the thing spins freely.

Starting to come together..

Finally started to put some things together today..

Motor mounted and main drive in place:

Gears attached by tapping and dying them onto the rod.

Will be cutting the steel tube down to size tomorrow and fixing it in place ready to be welded during the week. Once this is done, its all a matter of putting it together. Nothing more has to be me made after this.
I kicked the motor over and it seems to turn slower than I thought so I may not need to create a speed regulator.
I hope the gears mesh well. I think that part of the construction will be the most critical and fiddly part of the whole thing.

This was the thought of a graphic designer not the thought of by AN ACTUAL printer..

AS a offset printer myself there is nothing worse than a dirty press :|

SF59 Beetlar

Super Festival 59 happened recently and guess who made an appearance. BEETLAR.
Pics from Buster Call:

The lighting really changes the colours.. These ones from Kaiju Korner make it look a lot like a monster suit from a tokusatsu.

It really is one of my favourite sculpts.. and like always this next picture doesn’t surprise me :(

Slow and steady wins the race.. I hope.

Yeah, I’m still working on it. I really only get time to sit down and work on it during weekends, and if I’m out on weekends I don’t get to do anything.

Here’s where I’m at:

Handmade pulleys

Electric window motor with small pulley attached

A mock up of where everything will kind of go

2:1 ratio gears which will drive the inner frame and a started sketch to work out measurements.

This will mean the inner frame will rotate once for every 2 rotations of the outer frame.
A mess of plans.

The above pic is what I’m doing now. Drawing out each technical part of the construction to determine final measurements and bring to light any problems or things I haven’t thought of.

The reason I haven’t really built much is because the distance between part C & D determines the length of part A etc etc.. I have to measure and calculate 2-3 times because everything rides pretty much on the measurement of something else..

I’ve settled on the plastic gears, mainly due to the fact that I had to wait a month before I could get the meccano ones. So I figured because they’ll only be turning at 10-20rpm and as long as I mesh them correctly they should be sufficient. They were $15.51.
I’ve also bought 2m of 13x13 steel tubing for the rotating frame. Dad has a guy at work who can weld it up for me. Cost me $10.
Total cost so far: $25.51 :D

Also did another scribble for a character:

Seeing these is both exciting and depressing. I really want the grey one..

Follow the source, if you can handle a lot of huge pictures. This is an INSANE level of detail in construction, the model actually transforms.

HOLY FUCKING CRAP. I take my hat off to the designer. GIVE THIS PERSON A MEDAL FOR AWESOMENESS
